Southwest Valley Writing Group

"Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities. Truth isn't."
     ~ Mark Twain

Joining is free and is open to all with an age minimum of 18.

This writing group is aimed at fiction writers of novels (novelists), and memoirs (fictional memoirists), with completed manuscripts. Those without one will find us a challenge.  Evidence of a completed manuscipt must be established

Novice writers who seek to improve their writing skills in: grammar, punctuation or the 'tool-box' of writing should consider taking a basic writing class at the local college, not this writing group.

The group covers most genres: adult romance, sci-fi, adult fantasy, historical, military, westerns, suspense and crime-stoppers (if they take place prior to 1945). While it specializes in fiction,  memoirs are in reviewed.  However, they must be fictionalized works. No children's fiction, young adult romance, Carpathians, horror, New Age, poetry, pornography, at this time, perhaps later these genre will be added.

There is an orientation meeting (for local writers) usually take place at a local bookseller, where guidelines for joining are discussed. The priviledge to have our writers read your work will be made known by an email process usually within 7-days of attending a meeting. Long-distance writers and those out-of-state do not need to attend this meeting.

Evaluation of a visitor's work is never done during the meeting.

Visitors seeking admission must be prepared to show evidence of their work at the Orientation Meeting. Current writing partners are invited to the Orientation Meeting and make their own conclusions as to whether or not to accept a visitor as a writing partner.  Their presence is optional.

Writers living great distances from us may submit evidence of their writing through the Internet.  Again, we are only working with writing partners who have a completed manuscript. No exceptions. No works 'almost' completed.

The critique section has a cap of no more than (6) authors. We try to keep the size to (4) or (5) writers.  We fill quickly, and then close.  Two sections open each year.  The 'What's New' Page of this website posts notices of new openings or newly forming writing groups.

Writers, who once were in the writing group, must understand the current system has changed since 2002.  The old guidelines do not apply in 2008, and 2009 is weeks away.  Our 7th Year!

Finally, a writer may be asked to leave at any time.
