Southwest Valley Writing Group         Standards for Writing

The Prickly Cactus Path to Fun, Growth, & Success

*  Standards help us stay together!

*  Writing partners must be willing to share writing by means of the Internet.

Our standards are to keep things moving smoothly...

FUN!
      GROWTH!
                    SUCCESS!

"I never discuss a novel while I'm writing it, for fear that talking about it will diminish my desire to write it."
    ~ Dean Koontz

Somewhere around here is a great story!

"When asked, "How do you write?" I invariably answer, "one word at a time."" ~ Stephen King

1. Submitting materials:

All writing is transfered by Internet.  Distribution is officially by email Attachment.  After writers agree to transfer writings, they must allow time to critique the writing.  Material received after the accepted deadlines is critiqued at the option of the writers.  Writing partners agree to critique all members.  The group makes every effort to keep members to fewer than (6).

2. Oral Critiques

None!  We're an Internet group!

3.  Word-count Limits

The group will set the
word-count limit.  Currently, it is 9000 word per submission period.

4. The Internet Safety:

Exercise security precautions when dowloading and opening all submitted material, using the most up-to-date anti-virus and spy-ware software.

"The writer must believe that what he is doing is the most important thing in the world. And he must hold to this illusion even when he knows it is not true." ~ John Steinbeck

“You must keep sending work out; you must never let a manuscript do nothing but eat its head off in a drawer. You send that work out again and again, while you're working on another one. If you have talent, you will receive some measure of success - but only if you persist.”
      ~ Isaac Asimov

“There are three rules for writing the novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are.” ~ W. Somerset Maugham

5.  Hardcopy materials

There are none.  We are an Internet group.

6.  Adult themes:

Writers must alert the readers, on both the draft and email message of the nature of the adult theme.  Graphic violence, sexually explicit content while not discouraged, should be well written, free of typos, misspellings, and bad punctuation. It should be interesting, carry the theme of a story, enhance a key character, and it should not have cliche descriptions, and not dominate the writing.

Controversial writing is not discouraged, although it should not incite the group to anger and disruption.  Writers are not obligatged to read what in their opinion is offensive material.

Profanity should be restricted to the story dialogue, and rarely should it dominate the narration or description.
